Circular economy, key to the environmental and economic sustainability of companies

VI Forética Circular Economy Forum

The circular economy has become the fundamental way to guarantee the environmental and economic sustainability of companies, as well as to advance the decarbonization of the planet.

According to the managers participating in the VI Forética Circular Economy Forum, this transition will only be possible through strategic alliances, even between competitors, and the constant measurement of results.

German Granda, general director of Forética, an organization that promotes sustainability and brings together more than 200 companies, highlighted that currently only 7,2% of the world economy is circular. In the European Union, this percentage rises to 11% thanks to recycling and reuse efforts. However, a greater push is required to achieve the desired objectives.

"We have seen examples of all kinds and have compared all the work we have done during the year, especially in terms of measurement and anticipation of the regulations that are coming in this area," he stated. Raquel Canales, manager of the Circular Economy Action Group at Forética. "From a policy standpoint, we certainly encourage all companies to move forward on their path towards a circular economy."

Within the framework of the forum held in Madrid, participants highlighted the importance of establishing alliances to increase recycling levels, which currently stand at 11% in Europe. The circular economy covers the entire production chain, from the design of products with a longer useful life to logistics and their responsible use.

"It is necessary to include concepts linked to the circular economy in product design to ensure that we can then extend their useful life," he explained. María Ricón Liévana, team leader of the Circular Economy of the General Directorate of the Environment of the European Commission"We must also consider aspects such as logistics, the use of products, and the extraction of raw materials, as we face limited resources."

The training of workers, collaboration between suppliers and consumers, the integration of the circular economy in business strategies and the constant measurement of circularity were the main topics of debate during the forum. It became clear that the circular economy is the only option to make businesses more competitive and sustainable in the long term.
