Economic situation and credit risk

Diana López Suárez, Production Director of Atradius, a credit insurance company, delivered the presentation entitled "Economic Outlook and Credit Risk," which inaugurated Hall 1 of the presentations at IMEX'04. López began by discussing the Spanish trade balance between January and October 2003, highlighting the 3,27% increase in the value of exports, reaching €101.498 million, compared to the same period of the previous year. This comment was accompanied by a comparative chart showing the main destinations for Spanish exports, with France accounting for 35% of Spanish sales abroad, followed by Germany with 20% and Italy with 12%. The Managing Director of Atradius then went on to analyze some of the key economic indicators for various countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and the United States.
The presentation continued by discussing "the value chain in commercial transactions," from the moment a product or service leaves the seller until it reaches the buyer. Diana López went on to explain the reasons why it is necessary to protect payment rights, as well as the increased risks involved in exporting, such as the possibility of non-payment or those arising from different legal systems and a lack of transparency.
Finally, the speaker explained what was called "the credit insurance triangle", formed by the insured, the insurer and the insured's client, with the latter being where the risk is concentrated.
