This international aviation consortium includes 17 companies
Egyptian airline Egyptair announced today in Cairo its integration into the international alliance "Star Alliance", which includes 17 international aviation companies.
The alliance's director, Jaan Albrecht, said at a press conference that with the addition of Egyptair, which will be completed within six to eight months, the Star Alliance group will be able to operate more than 17.700 daily flights to 944 destinations in 161 countries.
"The integration of Egyptair into the alliance is important because Egypt, as a gateway to Africa and the Middle East, offers numerous opportunities for both business and investment," Albrecht stated.
Egyptair's participation in that international group will increase Star Alliance's presence in the African market from 23 to 31 percent.
Once the full integration of the Egyptian company is complete, both Egyptair and the other members of the alliance will be able to use the new terminal, number three, at Cairo International Airport, which is expected to become an international aviation hub.
Egyptair CEO Atef Abdel Hamid said his company decided to join Star Alliance because of competition with other international alliances, which dominate almost 70 percent of the international aviation market.
It is expected that in the coming weeks the Chinese airline Shanghai Airlines (SAL) and Turkish Airlines will also join that alliance.
Ten years old, Star Alliance includes international companies such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Spanair, Singapore Airlines and Swissair, among others.
