At an event that brought together more than 1.200 wineries from all over Spain, Planas stressed that the gradual elimination of tariffs of up to 35% for EU wines entering Mercosur countries represents an unprecedented business opportunity.
“Currently, tariffs of up to 35% are applied to wines from the European Union entering Mercosur countries, tariffs that will be progressively eliminated,” explained Planas, highlighting that in the case of sparkling wines, the elimination will be immediate once the agreement comes into force.
The minister stressed that this agreement not only will boost exports, but will also allow the Spanish wine sector to diversify its markets and consolidate its reputation at a global level. This agreement is in line with the sector's environmental commitments, especially focused on sustainability and sustainable development, he added.
During his visit, Planas toured the fair and participated in various activities, including the tasting space. Wine Tasting Journey, where the award-winning wines were exhibited Food of Spain 2024. He also highlighted the Ministry's support for initiatives such as Hosted Buyers, which facilitates the presence of 800 international buyers at the fair.

The minister also recalled the importance of the sector adapting to new trends and highlighted the professionalism, innovation and strength of the Spanish wine sector, which generates more than 400.000 jobs and represents 1,9% of the country's gross added value.
Planas concluded by reaffirming the Ministry's commitment to promoting Spanish wine through initiatives such as the Alimentos de España brand and international campaigns developed in collaboration with the ICEX and the European Union"If there is one sector that has been able to adapt to climate change, it has been the wine sector," acknowledged the minister, highlighting the sector's ability to adapt to current challenges.
