Edinburgh City Council inaugurates the extension of the tram line built by Sacyr

Built by the SFN joint venture, led by Sacyr together with Farrans

City Council Edinburgh has inaugurated the extension of the tram line that connects the city center with Newhaven, built by the joint venture SFN, leadered by Sacyr along with Farrans.

 

The project, awarded by Edinburgh Trams, included the design, construction and commissioning and has involved an investment of 207 million pounds (240 million euros).

 

The extension of the line covers a stretch of eight new stops over 4,7 km, which will provide sustainable service to one of the most densely populated areas of the city. This increased connectivity will attract greater economic development, trade, employment and tourism to the neighborhoods of Leith and Newhaven.

 

The project, which was built on schedule, required an investment of 207 million pounds (240 million euros).

 

Maria Ortega, project director for Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructure, highlights the challenges overcome by the consortium: “The joint venture has adapted and overcome unprecedented global challenges: the COVID-19 pandemic. Covid, Brexit and the war in Ukraine. “We are proud of our team and what we have achieved together.”

 

The works began in November 2019 and have been completed according to the planned deadline. This project has overcome numerous challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the excavation and relocation of archaeological finds of a copy of the original wheels of the first tram dating from the XNUMXth century.

 

During the execution of the works, SFN has adopted a best practice approach to stakeholder engagement, such as the creation of logistics centers to support businesses and residents. We have managed more than 24.500 citizen participation commitments and more than 75.000 deliveries during this project.

Exhaustive testing phase

The new section of the tram has passed an exhaustive testing phase to guarantee the safety and planning of the new infrastructure, as well as the correct implementation of signage and integration with the Edinburgh Trams control center and the process of familiarizing drivers with this new journey.
