This exciting addition, the result of fruitful discussions with the FIFA, will see futsal replace U-21 football in the competition calendar.
This strategic decision underscores the growing popularity of futsal worldwide and aligns with the CIJM's commitment to promoting gender equality in sport. Furthermore, the inclusion of futsal is anticipated to reduce the overall costs of organizing the football tournament.
During the same session, Cayetano Cornet, Director of Activities for the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and member of the CIJM Executive Committee, formally announced the withdrawal of Alicante's bid to host the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games. The decision was made in response to the devastating floods that hit the region last October, causing significant human losses and damage.
“On behalf of the Spanish Olympic Committee, I regret to have to withdraw Alicante’s bid for the 2031 Beach Games,” Cayetano Cornet said, reading the COE’s letter. “Recent tragedies have made it impossible for the region to fulfill this commitment at this time. We thank the CIJM for their understanding and look forward to future opportunities for collaboration.”
