The great stage of biotechnology is celebrated in Seville with Biospain 2018

800 participating companies

Organized by the Spanish Association of Bioenterprises (ASEBIO), it is the largest biotechnology event in Spain and one of the most important worldwide.

BIOSPAIN 2018 is taking place until tomorrow in Seville. Organized by the Spanish Association of Bioenterprises (ASEBIO), It is the largest biotechnology event in Spain and one of the most important worldwide with more than 800 participating companies and more than 3.000 individual meetings. It is an event with a great international component since 34% of the participants come from outside Spain.

It takes place in the Seville Exhibition and Congress Centre. ASEBIO – Spanish Bioindustry Association co-organizes each biennial edition of BIOSPAIN with a local institution of the host city/region. In the 2018 edition, Biospain is co-organized by the Junta de Andalucía through IDEA Agency, Invest in Andalucia, and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Andalusia.

The last edition, 2016, was held in Bilbao. In that edition it was co-organized by SPRI (Basque Business Development Agency), dependent on Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government. The fair had nearly 800 entities from 29 countries. In addition, two years ago 1.750 delegates attended (28% of attendees of international origin), there were 233 exhibitors, 50 international investors, 49 conferences and 3.000 meetings were held.

extend It has been attending the event for several years, sometimes with an information stand, but this is the first time it has supported around twenty companies. Extenda develops a program to support the biotechnology sector in areas such as health and agri-food, such as participation in this important fair.

This action seeks to bring Andalusian companies closer to foreign markets and foreign investors, in addition to promoting international projects with this industry. Besides, extend has supported the Andalusian presence in this event in order to promote an agenda of work meetings that address new business opportunities. The organization of this action by extend has been co-financed with funds from the European Union the PO FEDER of Andalusia 2014-2020, endowed with a community contribution of 80%.

According to the report "Services for preparing a report on the Biotechnology sector in Andalusia for its internationalization” by Extenda in 2017, commercial regions Latin America, European Union and the United States stand out as the markets in which biotechnology companies from Andalucía.

In the case of United States The interest is both commercial (business generation) and the need to be present in said country in the main international hubs of the sector, such as the area of Boston and Austin in red biotechnology or California in the white bio.

United States It is the largest world market for biotechnology, both in terms of investment in R&D, as well as in number of companies and number of patents. It is also a leader in revenue from listing on the stock market, in market size, jobs generated and venture capital companies. Its global leadership in the last thirty years is largely due to biomedical innovation, the balance between the public and private sectors in financing and health policies, the protection of intellectual property or a competitive free market system that allows companies to recover the investment necessary to develop new medicines. This is a strategic sector for the US Government.

Something similar happens in the European Union, although to a lesser extent, although, for example, red biotechnology companies do show the need to be in countries where the main pharmaceutical companies are located and where biotechnology finds more development, such as Germany, United Kingdom, and to a lesser extent France, and Switzerland. These data take into account factors such as R&D spending for the biotechnology sector, the number of biotech companies or the percentage of biotechnology patents.

However it is Latin America the commercial block that receives the greatest number of responses as a target market, citing above all Mexico firstly, and secondly in a shared way Argentina and Colombia. Red biotechnology is of interest Germany, United Kingdom and France, in green biotechnology are of interest Mexico, Colombia and Argentina due to the location of the largest number of user companies.
