El Elcano Royal Institute and Botin Foundation invite the Virtual Elcano Debate “The impact of COVID-19 in Latin America: a provisional health, political and economic assessment”.

In one month, from March 14 to April 14, 2020, and as a consequence of COVID-19, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean They went from having 2.999 officially recognized cases and 55 deaths to 70.600 cases and 3.039 deaths. And while the peak of the pandemic has not yet arrived, it is not expected until May. Initially, time has worked in favor of regional governments, allowing them to take proactive measures, but despite this relative advantage, Latin America It has some important limitations in dealing with the coronavirus, such as the limited economic, fiscal and financial room for maneuver, with financial systems with great needs and rather sclerotic public administrations.
This new edition of Elcano Debates will attempt to answer questions about the depth of the crisis and its recovery options, taking into account, as always, the great heterogeneity that exists there.
