The Port of Barcelona strengthens its global appeal with multi-million-dollar investments and advances in sustainability.

 

Among the most notable agreements is the entry of MSC, the world's largest shipping group, at the terminal BEST through the acquisition of 50% of the shares of Tercat by Terminal Investments Limited Holding (TiL), a company majority-owned by MSC. This transaction, subject to approval by competition authorities, strengthens the collaboration between two industry giants and keeps the terminal open to general use, ensuring non-discrimination among users and the continuity of service.

 

Lidl Expands its Logistics Center for Europe

 

In a move that underlines the importance of the Port of Barcelona for European distribution, it has been awarded to CILSA an administrative concession of 99.135 m² in the ZAL Prat for the construction of a new logistics warehouse. This facility, with an investment of 42,1 million euros and a concession term of 34 years, will be operated by Lidl, the leading retail chain in Europe. The new warehouse, measuring 55.000 m² and 15 meters high, will complement Lidl's two existing warehouses in the ZAL Port, bringing the company's total managed area to 165.000 m² in this key area.

 

These agreements underscore the confidence of global investors in the Port of Barcelona, ​​strengthening its vital role in the Catalan economy and its international reach.

 

 

Boosting Sustainability with Dock Electrification

 

In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Board of Directors has approved the tender for the project to install the system Onshore Power Supply (OPS) at Cruise Terminal G, operated by Royal Caribbean GroupThis system will allow ships to be connected to electricity while docked, significantly reducing polluting emissions. With an investment of €12,6 million, the OPS is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, forming part of the ambitious Nexigen Dock Electrification Plan, which has already awarded €44 million in projects since 2021. This OPS will be connected to the Port of Barcelona's new medium-voltage network, whose main substation will come online in early 2027.

 

Renewal and Extension of the Management Term of the W Hotel

 

Finally, the Council has given the green light to the addendum to the lease agreement between Nova Bocana Barcelona, ​​SAU (NBB) and CIGAHOTELS España, SL, manager of the iconic W Hotel Barcelona, part of Marriott International. This agreement extends management for 10 years, with an option for a further five years until 5, and includes a complete renovation of the hotel facilities. This investment reaffirms Marriott International's commitment to the Port of Barcelona and the consolidation of the W Hotel as a global benchmark in the hospitality industry.
