This measure, promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, is part of the adaptation to the new European regulations for the external borders of the European Union.
The action responds to the need to implement in Spanish ports the European Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)The EES, in particular, is a common electronic system that will record the entry and exit of travelers from third countries, replacing traditional passport stamping. Its aim is to provide reliable data on border crossings, identify those who overstay their authorized period, and strengthen the fight against terrorism and other serious crimes.
For the effective implementation of these systems, the acquisition and installation of advanced technology is required, as well as the adaptation of spaces in port terminals. The primary objective is to guarantee a more agile and, above all, safer passenger flow at the EU's external borders.
In the specific case of Port of Barcelona, the modernization will focus on the cruise terminals (C, E, G and H) and the ferry terminals (Contradique and F2). The equipment will include automatic ABC doors, self service kiosks y monitoring and verification tablets. In addition, systems will be installed CCTV system, digital signage and physical elements for the separation and efficient management of passenger flow.
This important investment is contemplated in the 2024-2028 Investment Plan of the Port Authority of Barcelona, specifically in the Business Plan 2025, agreed with Puertos del Estado. Funding for this initiative can also be requested through Call 1/2024 of the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy (FSI) Program for the 2021-2027 Framework.
