Andalusian exports achieved a new historical record in the first quarter of 2023, reaching 10.379 million euros, the highest figure recorded for the first three months of a year since comparable data exists (1995), thanks to an interannual increase in sales of the 1,8%. These sales are driven by good performance in March, in which the community accumulated some record exports of 3.964 million euros, a figure never before reached this month, with an increase of 1,9% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The record record for the January-March period consolidates the activity of the Andalusian foreign sector in the world, which maintains in 2023 the growth trend with which it closed 2022, which concluded with a historical figure of exports that reached 42.958 million, with a year-on-year growth of 24,3%.
This increase in the Andalusian international bill in the first quarter of the year is determined by the increases registered by industrial chapters, such as copper, chemicals and automotive, to which is added the dynamism of the agri-food sector, in which the advance of vegetables stands out, which remains as the leading chapter in sales in Andalusia at the beginning of the year, ahead of fuels and olive oil.
In the origin and destination of exports, the growth recorded by six provinces and four of the top five sales destinations stands out, in the latter case all in double digits, as well as the large growth recorded in non-European markets such as USA, Egypt, Brazil or Mexico, which provide diversification.
According to the latest data made public by Andalusia TRADE, Public Business Agency for the Transformation and Economic Development of Andalusia of the Junta de Andalucía, imports by Andalusia also increased during the first three months of the year by 2,1%, up to 10.742 million, which places the coverage rate at 96,6%, only 3,4 points away from the trade balance. and 2,6 points above Spain (94%), which suffers a trade deficit of 6.578 million euros.

The US gains a position
Sales of the Andalusian foreign sector in January and March registered significant growth in four of its first five international markets, gaining presence in its first non-European destination, USA, which gains a place in the ranking, now being the fourth world destination, with a growth of 26,2%, up to 836 million euros, 8,1% of the total.
Within the Top 10 markets in Andalusia, highlights Portugal, with the highest growth in the Top10, 26,3%, ranking as the third destination in Andalusia, with a bill of 938 million euros, 9% of the total; France, second in sales with the third highest increase, of 21,9% to 1.164 million euros, 11,2% of the total; Germany, , with 1.242 million (12%), which rose 11,5% and occupies the first position in the market ranking, and United Kingdom, sixth, with 619 million, 6%, and an increase in sales of 2,1%.
In the rest of the European countries, some decreases were recorded in this period: Italy It is the fifth destination, with 825 million (7,9%) and a decrease of 9%; followed by Netherlands, seventh by value of exports, with 577 million, 5,6%, which decreased by 5,8%; and Belgium, ninth, with 292 million, 2,8%, and 29,3% less. Outside the European continent, Morocco It occupies eighth place with a bill of 388 million euros, 3,7% of the total, and a decrease of 12,3%; and China It is tenth, with 275 million, 2,6%, and 15,3% less.
Advances in destination diversification
The behavior of the top 20 markets reveals important advances in the diversification of destinations in the Andalusian foreign sector: by country, the increases in Egypt (16th), 33%, up to 92 million euros; Brazil (17th), where exports more than double that of the first quarter of 2021 (+112%), up to 87 million euros; Mexico (18th), with an increase of 35% to 87 million; South Korea (19th), which rises 23,7% to 83 million; either to Canada (20th), with an increase of 67% to 81 million.
By continental markets, the behavior of America, where they grew by 37,8% compared to the first quarter of 2022, up to 1.305 million euros. The progress is especially positive in South America, where sales almost doubled (+93,2%), reaching 238 million; followed by Central America and Caribbean, with an increase of 33,6%, to 150 million, and North America, where the growth is 28,9%, reaching 917 million euros in sales.
