Live with Alfredo Echevarria, Director of Customer Marketing UPS Spain and Portugal

For ecommerce to work, the logistics operator is a fundamental part of the machine, who is responsible for ensuring that what we buy with a click is in our homes within a few hours, or days.

In this new live Foreign CompanyWe keep talking about international digital trade and the importance of logistics partner.

El E-commerce rubbed, only in Spain, the 40.000 million euros of turnover in 2018, according to data from the National Market and Competition Commission, 29% more than the previous year. More than 26 million Spaniards buy through stores or online platforms, spending an average of 64 euros on each purchase.

And so that he ecommerce function, the logistics operator is a fundamental piece in the machine, who makes sure that what we buy at the click of a button is in our homes within a few hours, or days.

To learn in more detail what procedures and services logistics companies offer to their business clients, both those who sell in their own online stores and those who do so through marketplaces, we have had with us Alfredo Echevarria Cuadrado, director of Customer Marketing at UPS in Spain and Portugal. With it we address whether ecommerce has changed the services provided by logistics companies, and what challenges the sector faces.

We highlight the following from his intervention:

(On whether e-commerce has changed the work carried out by logistics operators) "In a way, yes, not only because of B2C ecommerce but also because of B2B; business buyers have been changing and have transferred their personal purchasing behavior to professional ones."

Our traditional role as transporters is clear, pick up and deliver, but there is a whole task behind it which is consulting, we are increasingly focused on helping our clients export.”.

"The e-commerce customer is increasingly demanding and requires more and more logistics services; they demand flexibility.",

(On services to marketplaces or own online stores) "Regarding transport, it's the same; we collect in one postal code and deliver to another. What's clear is that when you have your own website you can customize (your services), but in the marketplace you have to adapt to the marketplace's purchasing process."

"In Spain, around 7% of retail purchases are made online, while in the UK the figure is 20%. This figure is expected to be reached around 2025; e-commerce will continue to grow, and we are investing in technology, infrastructure, and new equipment."

(Advice for companies with an e-commerce business) "Be clear about which countries you can sell in and have a strategy; put yourself in the hands of a logistics provider that can provide you with a quality service to maintain your business over time."
