The Spanish tomato, the star of Fruit Attraction 2025

 

The tomato will be the «Star Product" in the 17th edition of Fruit Attraction, the most important international fruit and vegetable fair. Organized by IFEMA MADRID and FEPEXThe event will take place from September 30 to October 2 and seeks to highlight the value and importance of Spanish tomatoes in the global context.

 

Tomatoes are the most consumed vegetable worldwide, and in Spain, they represent 24.23% of household fresh vegetable consumption. In 2024 alone, consumption grew by 6.25% thanks to the diversification of varieties and the trend toward healthier diets.

 

Spain is a powerhouse in tomato production, with Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia and the Canary Islands as the main producing communities.

 

The sector is distinguished by its strong export orientation, with 675,000 tons sold abroad and a value of 1,100 billion euros, with Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands as the main markets.

 

In addition to its economic importance, tomatoes are a fundamental ingredient in the Mediterranean Diet. Their high content of lycopene, antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber makes them a key food for balanced nutrition.

 

Innovation and debate in the program

 

The Fruit Attraction 2025 program includes a series of activities dedicated to tomatoes. Highlights include the installation of a greenhouse garden in the #alimentosdespaña Plaza, which will allow visitors to learn about various tomato varieties.

 

A meeting will also be held among the main tomato-producing countries in the European Union to sign a joint manifesto in defense of local production. The event will also feature the Tomato Attraction Forum, a space for knowledge and debate, where European Commission tools for the sector will be presented and the geopolitical implications of the tomato trade will be analyzed.

 

The fair will be the stage for the delivery of the Tomato Awards 2025, which will recognize prominent figures and companies in the sector. There will also be tastings and show cooking sessions with chefs, who will demonstrate the versatility of this product.
