19,1 percent
Chile's international air traffic grew by 19,1 percent last August compared to the same month in 2006, transporting a total of 399.067 passengers, the Civil Aeronautics Board (JAC) reported today.
Between January and August of this year, a total of 3.278.952 passengers were transported, representing an increase of 18,7 percent compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, international cargo traffic registered an increase of 18,1 percent in the first eight months of the year.
"These results reflect improved economic conditions in the country, especially regarding the exchange rate, but also an effort by operators to offer more alternatives with more competitive and convenient rates," said JAC Secretary General Jorge Frei.
The destinations with the highest year-on-year growth between January and August 2007 were Rio de Janeiro (77,7%), Lima (40,9%), Paris (33,6%), Sydney (33%), Quito (31,8%), Bogota (31,8%) and Caracas (31,4%).
The airlines with the largest market share during the period were Chilean LAN (52,4%), Brazilian Gol Trans (6,5%), American Airlines (4,6%), Aerolíneas Argentinas (4,2%) and Spanish Iberia (3,6%).
In August, domestic traffic saw a growth of 26,4 percent, registering 332.728 passengers transported, while the accumulated total between January and August increased by 19 percent with a total of 2.563.193 passengers.
"In these eight months of the year, lower fares and greater competition led to high traffic growth in the destinations with the highest participation, specifically the routes connecting Santiago with Copiapó, La Serena, Puerto Montt and Osorno," Frei highlighted.
Lan Chile and Lan Express concentrated 72,5 percent of the market share, while Sky Service held 17,3 percent.
