Cargo traffic at the Port of Santander remains strong despite the economic slowdown

The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), Cesar Diaz, has presented a balance of the traffic results until August 2025, highlighting that the port has achieved a year-on-year traffic of 7.130.118 tons between September 2024 and August 2025. This confirms the capacity of Cantabrian infrastructure to maintain robust logistics activity.

Díaz stressed that these figures reflect "the achievement of the objectives set for 2025, which include the consolidation of seven million tonnes and the increase in general merchandise, accompanied by a significant investment effort in infrastructure." In his opinion, the focus on general merchandise of higher added value is key to generating employment and increasing the competitiveness of the port.

El accumulated traffic Between January and August of this year it reached 4.615.247 tons, showing a slight decrease of 1,1% compared to the same period in 2024. Despite this slight drop, the president of the APS described the figure as "very positive", as it compares to the record year in the port's history. "This means we are meeting the objectives set for this year, which are based on responsible financial management that allows us to continue investing in infrastructure to increase competitiveness and service quality," he added.

The port has demonstrated a notable growth in specific categories. Container traffic increased by 5,9%, reaching 106.526 TEUs, and automobile traffic grew by 3,4%, totaling 211.386 units. Cruises have also shown a significant increase, rising from 13 calls in 2024 to 17 to date, with a forecast of closing the year with 21 calls.

Currently, the distribution of freight traffic is as follows:

Liquid bulk: 3,3%
Solid bulk: 43,9%
General merchandise: 52,8%

Díaz concluded his statements by emphasizing the strategic role of the port for the economy of Cantabria and its commitment to the port community to adapt to the "changing needs of international logistics".
