The Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium provides trade promotion services, logistical support, and assistance to Spanish exporters seeking contacts in Belgium.
-What is the current status of trade between Spain and Belgium?
We are talking about two countries with mature economies. Of our trade, 52-54% belongs to the industrial sector, resulting from the movement of goods derived from industrial integration, components and engine parts… this is the fundamental bulk of our trade.
There are some interesting facts; in fact, Belgium accounts for 3% of our exports, which is a significant figure considering the country's size. Belgium is Spain's eighth largest customer and seventh largest supplier. Import-export trade reaches around €8.500 billion, exceeding our trade with Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. If we exclude oil, trade would likely be even greater than with Latin America.
Belgium has a significant income level, is located in the strategic center of Europe, and Belgians have particular consumption patterns that result in higher per capita consumption of certain Spanish products in Belgium than in France, Germany, Italy… “There is a very strong business investment in transport and distribution due to the country’s geographical location.”
-How is the market by sector?
In wine, the market is clearly dominated by France, followed by Portugal with Port wine, then Italy with 5% and then Spain with almost 4%.
France is losing market share primarily due to pricing issues, not appreciation, and is losing ground to the Spanish and Nordic markets.
Thus, Spain is increasing its market share in the country, regardless of prices, since Belgian consumers focus on the brand.
Spanish tiles are in a good position after Italian ones. Traditional citrus exports are stable, and the automotive sector, as I mentioned before, stands out, as do the chemical and financial sectors, which are very competitive in Belgium.
