Spain promotes the 2026 Ibero-American Summit Agenda with a focus on regional cooperation and unity.

 

During the meeting, which took place in the Palacio de Viana, Minister Albares reaffirmed Spain's firm commitment to the Summit system and to the region of Latin AmericaHe emphasized the importance of fostering a "community that shares values, common goals, human, cultural, social, and economic ties, and, above all, a unique way of being and existing in the world, properly Ibero-American."

 

Albares emphasized the unanimous support of the Ibero-American Community for the Spanish candidacy to host the 2026 SummitAccording to the minister, this is a clear example of "Spain's projection and its foreign policy with its own identity," as well as the country's growing weight in the international sphere.

 

Spain's main objective ahead of the 2026 Summit is to begin a new phase of reaffirmation and consolidation of the Ibero-American system, identifying new priorities. To this end, we are seeking in-depth reflection to strengthen and adapt the system's working methods to current challenges and realities.

 

In the field of cooperation, Spain, from its position of Pro Tempore Secretary, will direct the efforts of the Ibero-American Cooperation Officers around three fundamental axes:

 

 

1. Convergence of positions on shared issues such as financing for development and increasing the influence of the Ibero-American Space.

2. Deep reflection on the system of "Ibero-American Cooperation" itself.

3. International projection of the "Ibero-American Cooperation" in other global forums.

 

In addition, the approval of the Fourth Four-Year Action Plan for Ibero-American Cooperation 2026-2029, a key instrument to guide future actions in this area.

 

Other strategic objectives include advancing the mobility of students and teachers, the recognition of qualifications and homologations, and the international promotion of Spanish and Portuguese, languages that constitute a shared cultural heritage of incalculable value.

 

This meeting marks a key step in the preparation of the event, since Spain assumed the Pro Tempore Secretariat in 2024, following the Summit held in Cuenca, Ecuador.

 

Milestones on the Calendar towards the 2026 Summit

 

Albares and Allamand also reviewed the calendar of key events leading up to the 2026 Summit. Among the upcoming milestones is the Ibero-American Foreign Ministers' breakfast to be held in New York In September, within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, as well as the statutory meeting of foreign ministers scheduled for November. Administrative aspects related to the organization of the Summit were also addressed.

 

Finally, Minister Albares and Secretary General Allamand reviewed the results of the meeting of foreign ministers in Seville, which took place on July 1, coinciding with the United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development.
