Spain boosts connectivity in Latin America: Dominican Republic joins Hispasat Satellite Project

 

This agreement will allow the Caribbean country to participate in an innovative project shared satellite infrastructure, led by the satellite telecommunications company.

 

The initiative seeks to provide the Dominican Republic with a sovereign digital infrastructure, crucial to improve the connectivity in hard-to-reach areas and for the independent and effective management of public policies. The Dominican Republic joins six other countries in the region that are already collaborating on preliminary studies for this ambitious project, including Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

 

The signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures such as Amparo López Senovilla, Secretary of State for Trade of Spain; Guido Gómez Mazara, President of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute; and Pedro Duque, President of Hispasat.

 

 

With the signing of this MOU, seven Latin American regions are now evaluating participation in this shared satellite project: Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Paraguay, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and now the Dominican Republic.

 

 

This project, which is part of the 'Digital Alliance' between the European Union and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, aims to strengthen the region's digital infrastructure with quality and sustainable solutions. Funded by the European Commission's Global Gateway funds, it underlines Spain's commitment to supporting the international expansion of its companies, fostering the technology transfer, promoting the business competitiveness and establishing Spanish companies as leaders in the global economy.

 

The Satellite Infrastructure Project: A Leap Towards Universal Connectivity

 

The shared satellite project allows participating countries to efficiently acquire and manage critical satellite telecommunications infrastructure. It consists of a dedicated space segment for each country, integrated into the new satellite, and a ground segment, or teleport, which guarantees sovereign management of the transmitted data.

 

La satellite connectivity The technology offered by Hispasat is essential for overcoming the limitations of terrestrial infrastructure, providing coverage in areas where traditional networks do not reach or are very expensive to implement. This technology guarantees reliable access to the Internet and is vital for the development of key sectors such as long distance education, the telemedicine and other essential digital services.

 

With the Dominican Republic's accession, the project continues to consolidate itself as a powerful tool for digital development and inclusion in the region.
