Spain participates in G20 ministerial meeting where the global geopolitical situation was analyzed

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, concluded his participation in the G20 Ministerial Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa Under the motto "Solidarity, equality and sustainability", he brought together foreign ministers from the countries of the group, to whom he presented Spain's proposals and position in the new international context.

In this regard, the Spanish minister, together with the rest of the G20 participants, analyzed the situation of the global geopolitics and issues such as climate change, food security, reform of the financial architecture, debt sustainability, poverty and inequality reduction, digital governance and the impact of artificial intelligence.

Albares reaffirmed at all times Spain's commitment to multilateralism and to dialogue forums such as the G20

Albares outlined Spain's proposals in response to pressing issues that require a response from the international community, since the conflict in Near East, for which he defended the implementation of the two-state solution, so that the State of Israel coexists with the State of Palestine in peace and security, until the search for a fair and lasting peace that puts an end to the aggression of Russia against Ukraine and of which both Ukraine and Europe must necessarily be a part.

The minister also had the opportunity to participate in a meeting held by EU member states, together with the High Representative and Norway, to coordinate their common position on the situation in Ukraine. In his various interventions during the G20 sessions, Albares reiterated Spain's unequivocal support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and advocated peace negotiations that must include the democratic Government of Ukraine and the European voice and be in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter.

International Conference on Financing for Development

The Spanish minister highlighted the opportunity that the International Conference on Financing for Development will host from the end of June Seville. This is the first one held in a Western country, ten years after the last one, held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and will represent a key opportunity to promote new initiatives and ambitious commitments for the fulfillment of the 2023 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bilateral meetings

Minister Albares' participation in this G20 ministerial meeting also facilitated bilateral meetings, such as the one he held with his counterparts from South Africa, Algeria, Canada, South Korea and Türkiye, as well as with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, among others.
