Spain and Serbia promote bilateral relations and European integration

The two ministers discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, including strengthening trade and business relations and promoting Spanish language teaching in Serbia. This rapprochement comes at a significant time, as 2026 will mark the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 50th anniversary of the reopening of their embassies.

Serbia's integration into the European Union was one of the central topics of the meeting.

A highlight on the agenda is the confirmation of Spain's participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade with a main pavilion.

During the meeting, the ministers signed a Cooperation Agreement between the Diplomatic Schools of both countries, a step that seeks to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and the training of future diplomats.

Serbia's integration into the European Union was another key topic of discussion. Minister Albares reiterated Spain's firm support for Serbia's candidacy, encouraging the country to continue with the necessary reforms to meet EU requirements. "Spain supports Serbia's candidacy to join the European Union and encourages it to carry out the necessary reforms," Albares stated, also recalling the 2023 agreement aimed at boosting cooperation in this integration process.
