"Oil development strategies in the Arab world: the case of Algeria"

The meeting aims to explain what the development model of the so-called oil economies consisted of, while attempting to reflect on the context in which the New International Order was created in the 1970s, among other aspects.

The conference will take place on Wednesday, November 17 "Oil development strategies in the Arab world: the case of Algeria", in charge of Aurelia Mané, professor of Economic Policy at the University of Barcelona.

The event, which will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the headquarters of Arab house in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62), aims to explain what the development model of the so-called oil economies consisted of, while attempting to reflect on the context in which the New International Order in the 1970s. After a brief historical review of the world economic situation at the beginning of the 1970s, the main characteristics of the oil economies will be analyzed, to then enter into the debate of the reasons for their failure, in terms of economic development. Part of this explanation will be illustrated by exposing the case of Algeria, a very relevant protagonist of this initiative. 

The next day, Thursday, November 18, the International seminar "Borders and oil in the formation of Arab states: 100 years since the Cairo conference (1921)". Organized in collaboration with the Center d'Estudis Antoni Capmany of the University of Barcelona, the event will focus on the political economic analysis of the moment of the creation of Iraq and its evolution in subsequent years, with special emphasis on the moment of establishment of its borders so that its resources were integrated into the world capitalist system and the oil regime international.

The seminar will begin with a first introductory session on “Borders, mandates and oil in the configuration of the Middle East”, which will feature the intervention of Aurelia Mañé Estrada, professor of Economic Policy at the University of Barcelona (UB), and Elvira Sánchez Mateos, professor of the Master's Degree in International Studies at said university, and the participation of Carmen Rodríguez López, professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) in moderation and Gonzalo French Notary, professor of Economic Policy at the National University of Distance Education (UNED) and director of the Energy and Climate Change Program at the Elcano Royal Institute, in the comments and first reaction.

The second session will discuss “State, oil and war in the formation of Iraq”, With the help of Nida Allahmad, Professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. She will be moderated by Olivia Orozco de la Torre, coordinator of Training and Economy of Casa Arabe and will have the participation of Isaías Barreñada Bajo, professor of International Relations at the UCM, as a first comment/reaction. This conference has been organized within the framework of the University Arab Classroom 3 program, in collaboration with the degree in International Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the UAM.
