EXPORTA 2001

The globalization of the economy, far from being a mere cliché, is rapidly becoming a tangible reality for Spanish businesses, which are beginning to reap the benefits of a borderless market. However, no one ever said that internationalizing a company would be easy. Therefore, trade fairs like EXPORTA are becoming essential events for anyone capable of envisioning a business that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.
EXPORTA 2001, organized between November 21 and 23 by the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX), in collaboration with the Consorci de Promoció Comercial de Catalunya (COPCA) and Fira de Barcelona, at whose Montjuïc-2 venue the event took place, showed visitors the essential tools needed to compete in international markets.
The event was inaugurated by HRH the Prince of Asturias, who was accompanied on his tour of the event facilities by Juan Costa, Secretary of State for Trade and Tourism, Antoni Subirá, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the mayors of Barcelona, Joan Clos and of l'Hospitalet, Celestino Corbacho, and the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Julia García Valdecasas, among other personalities.
The numbers for EXPORTA 2001 leave no doubt about the success of the Fair: 130 exhibitors from 30 service sectors, 8.199 professional visitors, 100 workshops, and 1.175 interviews between the 40 advisors from the Economic and Commercial Offices of Spain abroad and businesspeople.
One of the main attractions of the Fair was precisely the workshops, which brought together 5.335 people, surpassing the figures of the previous edition. In these workshops, official bodies, banking institutions, and exhibiting companies analyzed, discussed, and exchanged experiences related to the internationalization of businesses.
ICEX explained to participants how to obtain medium and long-term export financing, how to start exporting (PIPE 2000), international taxation, express transport as a key to the success of export activity, Spanish trade policy and the marketing of products and services in Morocco, Poland, Latin America and South Africa, among many others.
For its part, COPCA presented its electronic export services platform, offering useful information for companies through its website. COPCA also outlined its program on "internationalization and knowledge management," in which specialized consultants provide support to companies seeking to expand their international presence by leveraging their human capital and participating in the Microenterprise Program.
Regarding the international meeting point, 40 advisors from Spain's Economic and Commercial Offices abroad, under the Ministry of Economy, answered all the exporters' questions. In total, 1.175 interviews were conducted in the international area. The countries with the highest number of information requests were Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Hungary, France, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and South Africa.
Finally, it is worth highlighting the 7th Meeting of Business Promotion Centers, organized by COPCA, which provides personalized advisory services to Catalan companies wishing to enter foreign markets. At this meeting, more than 800 interviews were conducted, with the centers in Mexico, Miami, São Paulo, Warsaw, Paris, and the offices in China standing out for their high demand for information.
