The Government launched the initiative in June 2015 Smart Cities Mission To improve and modernize the urban landscape of Indian cities, promote cities that offer core infrastructure and provide a decent quality of life for their citizens, a clean and sustainable environment, and the implementation of "smart" solutions. The goal is to build a total of 100 smart cities by 2023. The budget is divided into: Modernization activities in identified areas (€20.400 billion) and "smart growth" initiatives (€4.858 billion).

Challenges to follow according to the country's urban growth are: reducing the vulnerability of cities to migration, demographic changes, environmental degradation and climate change; reduce carbon footprint; improve the quality of life of the inhabitants, as well as improve the quality of the environment.
