Ferrovial is committed to sustainability in the Paris Metro: it will build a section with 100% renewable electricity

A commitment to decarbonization

Ferrovial, through its Construction division, and its French partner Spie batignolles have reached an agreement with Électricité de France (EDF) to guarantee that the necessary electricity supply during the construction work of the section of line 18 of the Paris Metro .

Ferrovial, through its division of Construction, and its French partner Spie batignolles, have signed a pioneering agreement with Electricity of France (EDF) to ensure that the work on the section of line 18 of the Paris Metro for which they are responsible is carried out using only electricity from renewable sources.

 

This agreement, which represents an investment of 4 million euros, demonstrates Ferrovial's firm commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change. The company has set the goal that all its projects are supplied with 100% renewable energy by 2025, and this project in the Paris Metro is part of this ambitious strategy.

 

The use of renewable electricity during the construction of the section of line 18 of the Paris Metro will avoid the emission of 7.396 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 3.698 homes. This initiative contributes significantly to the decarbonization of public transport in the French capital and positions Ferrovial as a benchmark in sustainability within the construction sector.

To carry out this project in a sustainable way, Ferrovial and Spie batignolles will use a variable density tunnel boring machine that was already used in the construction of a previous section of line 18. This technology makes it possible to revalue the excavated material, mainly sand, and take advantage of it to other phases of the project, in line with the Ferrovial Circular Economy Plan.

 

Ferrovial's climate strategy has been recognized by international organizations such as CDP and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which place it as one of the world's leading companies in environmental matters. The company aims to reduce its emissions by 35,3% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century.

 

The section of line 18 of the Paris Metro being built by Ferrovial and Spie batignolles is part of the project Grand Paris Express, the largest infrastructure initiative in Europe. This project contemplates the expansion of the French capital's metro network by 68 new stations and 200 kilometers of lines. It is expected to be operational in 2030.

 

Ferrovial has been present in France since 2013, when it was awarded the ITER project, the largest experimental fusion facility in the world. The company has signed eight contracts for this project and continues to strengthen its presence in the country with sustainable projects such as the section of line 18 of the Paris Metro.
