Ferrovial begins the construction of Rail Baltica, a milestone for European interconnectivity

A large-scale project

Ferrovial, through its Polish subsidiary Budimex, and its partners in the ERB Rail JV consortium, have kicked off the construction of the Rail Baltica high-speed line in Latvia.

This key project for the European railway interconnection is valued at €3.700 billion and represents a fundamental step to improve connectivity, boost economic growth and strengthen social cohesion in the Baltic region.

 

The Rail Baltica will have a route of approximately 220 kilometers and its construction will involve the construction of 175 engineering structures and 11 crossings for wildlife. The ERB Rail JV consortium, consisting of Budimex SA (Poland), Eiffage Génie Civil SAS (France) and Rizzani de Eccher SpA (Italy), will be in charge of carrying out the works.

The Rail Baltica high-speed line will become a backbone of transport in the Baltic region. It will not only improve connectivity between the Baltic countries and with the rest of Europe, but will also boost economic growth, job creation and social cohesion in the area.

 

The project has the financial support of the European Union, which has provided close to 85% of the financing through the Connecting Europe Facility. This program aims to support transport, energy and telecommunications infrastructure across the continent and considers Rail Baltica as a strategic work for the Baltic region and for European connectivity in general.

 

“The opportunity to implement the Rail Baltica project is both an honor and a challenge, given the project’s scope,” said Artur Popko, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Budimex. “The biggest challenge of this project will be integrating different organizations and cultures into a common project with the highest safety and quality standards,” he added.
