Spain – Philippines
Contradicting his initial statements, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to review the decision by his Environment Minister, Regina Lopez, to close 56% of the country's mines and suspend another 12% due to their environmental impact.
The measure sparked concern among owners and employees of mining companies and related industries. Although mining is considered a relatively small component of the Philippine economy (accounting for only 0,6% of GDP), it is estimated that approximately 1,2 million people could lose their jobs. It is unclear what will ultimately happen with this measure, as, regardless of its appropriateness, the president frequently changes his mind.
