The Colombian government today deemed as "monstrous" the statements made in the United States by opposition senator Gustavo Petro regarding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with that country, according to which that agreement "benefits" drug traffickers.

The Ministers of the Interior and Justice, and of Agriculture, Carlos Holguín and Andrés Felipe Arias, respectively, dismissed the statements of Petro, who asserted that this treaty will benefit the mafiosos who have taken over most of the country's land.

For Holguín, those statements are "unspeakable, sick, and of monstrous proportions."

According to Arias, Petro "is going to the United States to speak ill of Colombia, to betray it with lies."

Petro told Colombian radio station "La FM" from the U.S. that what he said in that country "is the same as what I have said in Colombia" and added that he did not understand "why it generates discussion."

"Millions of Colombians who live off the land were deprived of their land holdings, and a very small group kept the best lands in the country, and that was a product of drug trafficking," Petro said.

The reactions against the legislator from the Alternative Democratic Pole (PDA), recognized as one of the most brilliant Colombian parliamentarians, were joined by the president of Congress, Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez, who considered that "these statements are deadly for the country."

"Going to the United States to say that the Free Trade Agreement with the United States favors drug trafficking is an attack against Colombia," Gutiérrez said, adding that such statements "are worrying because they greatly damage the country's image."

Petro is in the United States to receive an award tomorrow from a human rights organization for his denunciations of links between politicians and far-right paramilitaries.

The US Congress is considering the approval or rejection of the free trade agreement between the two countries, whose negotiations culminated in February 2006 and which has already been approved by the Colombian legislature.
