El Saica Group, the European leader in the manufacture of recycled paper and sustainable packaging, has inaugurated a new biomass boiler at its plant Saica Paper in Champblain-Laveyron.
The new boiler, which uses biomass from local wood recovered within a 100-kilometer radius, replaces a natural gas boiler. With this technology, Saica strengthens its circular economy model, recovering end-of-life resources and significantly reducing its carbon footprint. This is the group's third French plant to adopt this technology, following Venizel y Nogent-sur-Seine.
An environmental commitment with tangible results
The installation, which was supported by the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME), is vital to the papermaking process, as it produces the steam needed for drying. With its implementation, the plant plans a series of significant environmental improvements:
Emissions reduction: A 60% reduction in fossil-based greenhouse gas emissions is expected.
Gas savings: Natural gas consumption will be reduced by 77%.
"Zero waste" objective: 105,000 tons of wood and 50,000 tons of paper by-products will be recovered annually, reducing waste sent to landfills by 90%.
The president and CEO of the Saica Group, Susana Alejandro, emphasized that this €174 million investment not only strengthens the plant's competitiveness but also creates value locally. "The inauguration of the Champblain biomass boiler is a significant step forward in our decarbonization journey. It demonstrates that it is possible to strengthen the international and sustainable competitiveness of our plants while creating value locally," he stated.
With more than 2,300 employees across 21 locations and an annual turnover of over one billion euros in France, Saica is establishing itself as a key player in the transition toward a more sustainable industry.
