According to him, Bush strongly believes in the need to conclude Doha with an agreement
US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez met today in Brasilia with Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Miguel Jorge and stressed the need for the Doha Round to succeed.
"We cannot afford to be complacent in the face of this generational opportunity to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty," Gutiérrez said at a press conference following his meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, under an informal economic consultation agreement between the two countries established in 2006.
Gutiérrez noted that successfully concluding the Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is "difficult," so one must "keep one's mind" on the goal of poverty reduction and the possibility of "extending growth throughout the world."
"I know that President (George W.) Bush strongly believes" in the need to conclude Doha with an agreement, and the United States "sees the benefits, the potential," Gutiérrez said.
The senior official appealed to developing countries and "especially" to Brazil, given its "leadership position," to "give impetus" to an agreement that will become a "great legacy for future generations."
Before his remarks in the Brazilian capital, Gutierrez defended the same ideas during a meeting of businessmen at the American Chamber of Commerce and Industries (Amcham), in Sao Paulo, the city where he began a two-day official visit to Brazil.
In Sao Paulo, the Secretary and his delegation discussed with local businessmen from the ethanol production sector new ideas to advance the promotion of fuel alcohol, which is led worldwide by the United States and Brazil.
The leader concludes his official visit this Thursday at a forum of top executives from Brazilian and American companies, which was created at the initiative of Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and George Bush, during the meeting they held last March at Camp David.
Next Friday, Gutiérrez will travel to Colombia to promote a trade agreement between the two countries, thus concluding his South American tour, which had its first stop in Uruguay.
