Horizon 2020 focuses on qualitative rather than quantitative elements

The Secretary General for Tourism, Amparo Fernández, pointed out that the Horizon 2020 Plan for Spanish tourism focuses more on qualitative than quantitative elements, and that "we are facing a unique project agreed upon with all members of the sector."

Fernández, who appeared before the Industry, Tourism and Trade Committee of the Congress of Deputies, highlighted the sector's approach in the 2008-2012 plan as a preparation for the 2020 horizon, which has attracted "the different components of the sector, both public and private."

According to the Secretary General, the strategy that tourism must address is "corresponding to an adjustment to all the programs that will be carried out with that year as the horizon, and which is based on the development plan of a more aggressive R&D&I policy."

According to Fernández, the 2008 budget responds to the need to address new strategic objectives within a new tourism economy, which allows for new tourism policies and innovation in the sector.

The Secretary General announced that a budget of 9 million euros has been allocated for these actions; work will also be carried out on the development of human resource training programs, as another objective to be met towards the demands of the 2020 horizon.

In terms of coordination and promotion of Spanish tourism, the General Secretariat will allocate 87 million euros, while 213 million euros will be used for sustainability to improve tourist infrastructure.

According to Amparo Fernández, all the actions planned for 2008 are aimed at preparing Spanish tourism for future challenges, adding greater value for the customer, acting "through the segmentation of our offer".

To meet the challenges facing the sector, the Secretary General considers collaboration between the "public" and "private" sectors "essential," which will allow us to improve the balance of tourism "within such a competitive environment as we have."
