Iberdrola Ingeniería y Construcción has been awarded a contract for the construction of the Benito Juárez hydroelectric plant, with a capacity of 17 megawatts (MW) and located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, for 10,5 million euros (13,9 million dollars).
Specifically, Iberdrola Ingeniería will be responsible, within a period of 21 months, for the design, engineering, supply of materials, construction, supervision and commissioning of this new clean energy generation plant, which will be located on the Tehuantepec River.
This project, tendered by the company Electricidad del Istmo S. de RL de CV, is the first "turnkey" project of this kind that the company has obtained outside of Spain for a client outside the Iberdrola Group.
With this contract, the subsidiary strengthens its presence in the North American market, where it has signed contracts over the last few years to carry out electrical infrastructure projects in Mexico for more than 690 million euros.
According to a statement from the company chaired by Ignacio Sánchez Galán, this award "confirms the company's new strategy of focusing on engineering and construction, mainly of electrical generation, distribution and control installations, as well as securing contracts abroad and outside the group."
Presence in Mexico
With the award for the construction of this hydroelectric plant, the company strengthens its presence in Mexico, where this year it has already started up the Altamira V plant (1.121 MW), and where it has an operating capacity throughout the country of more than 3.800 MW distributed among the combined cycle plants of Monterrey III (1.037 MW), Altamira III and IV (1.036 MW), La Laguna II (500 MW) and Altamira V (1.121 MW), and the Enertek cogeneration plant, of 120 MW.
