Iberdrola gets the green light for Windanker, its third wind power giant in the Baltic.

 

With an investment of 1.000 billion euros and an installed capacity of 315 megawatts (MW), this project is emerging as a fundamental pillar in the energy transition of Germany, , capable of supplying 315.000 homes, a figure equivalent to the population of Seville.

 

The BSH authorization marks the culmination of a rigorous approval process, paving the way for the start of construction this summer. Windanker, consisting of 21 state-of-the-art wind turbines with an individual capacity of 15 MW, will join the offshore wind farms Viking (350 MW) and Baltic Eagle (476 MW), consolidating the presence of Iberdrola in the region.

 

"Windanker represents a crucial milestone in our growth strategy in Germany, “This project will not only significantly increase the country’s renewable energy capacity, but will also boost the local economy and create jobs,” an Iberdrola spokesperson stated.

 

The construction of the offshore wind farm will involve the participation of leading companies in the sector. The Spanish company Windar will be responsible for manufacturing the 21 foundation structures (monopiles and transition pieces), while Siemens Games will supply the state-of-the-art wind turbines. The installation of the farm's internal wiring will also begin this year, marking significant progress in the project's realization.

 

Iberdrola's experience in the Baltic Sea, thanks to the operation of its Wikinger and Baltic Eagle wind farms, will allow it to optimize Windanker's efficiency. The company has already secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial and commercial clients, ensuring the project's viability and profitability from its planned start-up in 2026.

 

A notable milestone in Windanker's development is the strategic partnership with the Japanese energy company KansaiLast December, Iberdrola announced an agreement in which it maintains a majority stake of 51%, while Kansai acquires the remaining 49%. This collaboration strengthens Iberdrola's position in the global energy market and accelerates the transition toward a more sustainable future.
