This infrastructure will supply clean, emission-free energy to more than 400.000 homes, a figure that exceeds the combined population of cities such as Malaga and Bilbao.
The project, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 300.000 cars from the road each year, reinforces the company's commitment to combating climate change. It is also expected to generate more than 4.400 jobs and contribute $3.000 billion to the region, highlighting the construction of a new port in Salem and an offshore wind energy manufacturing plant in New bedford, both in Massachusetts.
Construction of the park could begin in 2025, once the power purchase agreement has been signed and approved, and it is estimated that it will be fully operational by 2029. This project will be located next to Vineyard Wind 1, also from Iberdrola, the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the country.
This progress in United States adds to other recent achievements of the company, such as the award of two new contracts in United Kingdom through its subsidiary ScottishPower, which will supply more than one million homes with clean energy.
“Iberdrola continues to be a pioneer in the development of renewable energy globally, investing in technologies such as offshore wind to advance towards decarbonization and reduce dependence on fossil fuels,” the company stated. With an installed capacity of 2.300 MW of offshore wind at the end of the first half of 2024, Iberdrola expects to reach 4.800 MW by 2026.
