The Auditorium of ICEX - Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade has welcomed the day “The Data Center industry in Spain and Latin America. “A shared and future vision”, organized by ICEX, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Spanish data center association, Spain DC, and aimed at public representatives and digitalization experts from ten Latin American countries, clients of the IDB, interested in learning about the Spanish experience in the sector. The countries are: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, El Salvador, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic.
A total of 45 Spanish companies who are involved in the entire life cycle of a data center, attended the event. This is a good example of an industry that is already a determining vector of transformation in our economies. Engineering companies, construction companies, integrators, operators, energy supply companies from renewable energy sources, digital services companies (cloud, Edge, SaaS, PaaS), cybersecurity, etc. In short, sectors of opportunity, which as data increases, demand increases.
Spain It is the European country where the data center sector is growing the most, critical infrastructures for interconnecting, storing, safeguarding and processing data on a large scale. This is a new sector in our promotion and information policy, which generates new oropportunities for the export of digital services from our country, in an economic and commercial world in which entities and companies choose to migrate their IT infrastructure to data centers. This generates opportunities, not only from the private sector and from companies with high technological content, but also from local corporations and public administrations that increase their demand and support for this type of digital services. Aware of the capacity of this industry, ICEX wants to export the Spanish model to other geographic areas, especially to Ibero-America.
To support this industry around data centers, ICEX collaborates with SpainDC -Spanish Data Center Association-, a recently created entity, and with the IFIS, particularly with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which has sovereign funds for the digitalization of Ibero-American countries, and technical operations for the development of digital infrastructures in countries in the region.

The purpose of the conference was to share the Spanish experience and possible risks associated with data center construction projects, generate synergies between Spanish entities and the governments of Latin America and present Spanish companies that intervene in the entire data center project cycle. And its medium-term purpose is to support the development of data infrastructures and contribute to the implementation of a digital bridge of Latin America with Europe.
After the institutional opening, panels of experts have taken place on critical aspects to consider before, during, and after a Data Center project, to give way to a networking lunch and finally bilateral meetings between Spanish companies and countries. LATAM.
At the opening of the day, the CEO of ICEX, María Peña, highlighted that “the data center industry is a decisive vector of transformation in our economies, with a very long value chain, which must be characterized not only by its high technological value, but also by its talent and training capacity. In short, sectors, all of them of opportunity.”
María Peña has also pointed out that “ICEX's objective is to contribute to its momentum through internationalization and, encourage their experience to help other countries achieve their own objectives.” In this sense, he has highlighted that in the digital era, "it will be the data that will contribute to continuing to strengthen the ties that unite us with Latin America, not only the technological ones, but also the cultural ones."
