Indra Group strengthens its leadership in quantum communications for the European defense and space sector.

Indra Group is strengthening its leadership in secure communications and quantum technologies, responding to the growing demand for robust and sovereign solutions to protect critical infrastructures throughout EuropeThe company is accelerating the implementation of secure quantum technologies for both military and civilian use, ensuring the resilience and reliability of communications networks in a rapidly evolving threat environment.

With the recent integration of its space subsidiary's capabilities in Portugal, joining those already existing in the group, Indra Group is positioned at the forefront in the development and integration of technologies Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)These technologies ensure tamper-proof communication by enabling secure key exchange through quantum channels. These efforts are part of several high-profile European initiatives, including the DISCRETION and participation in the series of exercises REPMUS, led by NATO.

The DISCRETION project, with an investment of 6 million euros financed by the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), has successfully demonstrated a secure quantum network for military use. The system integrates software-defined networking (SDN) with QKD technologies to secure tactical and strategic communications across different domains and borders. The demonstration, carried out in Brussels, demonstrated encrypted messaging capabilities, cyberthreat resilience, and operational flexibility—critical aspects for future European defense infrastructures. DISCRETION It brings together important European players from Portugal, Spain, Austria and Italy, serving as an example of European collaboration in secure quantum networks.

Indra Group's quantum security capabilities have also been successfully validated in the international exercise REPMUS, which underlines its strategic commitment to the NATO and other allied frameworks. These demonstrations highlighted quantum-encrypted messaging, key management, and multi-node network resilience—critical elements of the emerging secure communications architecture. The company also leads the NATO working group on military use cases for QKD, emphasizing its relevance in strategic defense dialogues.

In parallel, Indra is equipping the European Commission's cyber risk management center with COMSec, a secure communication system designed to withstand future quantum computing threats. Also, in the PQReact project, he is developing a framework technological to facilitate the transition to post-quantum cryptography in critical infrastructure. This further underscores Indra's commitment to protecting critical assets against evolving technological risks.

Indra Group also actively participates in the European Quantum Communications Infrastructure (EuroQCI), coordinating the Portuguese Quantum Communications Infrastructure (PTQCI) and collaborating in the deployment of the infrastructure in Spain (EuroQCI Spain), where it is integrating its key manager (KMS) adapted to this technology.

In the space sector, the company brings comprehensive expertise in QKD technology, both in LEO and GEO orbit, ranging from system architecture and key distribution protocols to optical terminals and fiber network integration. The company's work spans both terrestrial and space domains, ensuring compatibility and performance in future quantum-enabled environments.

With the creation of Indra SpaceIndra Group is advancing to become one of the largest space companies on the continent and the only one with the capacity to cover the entire value chain of a space project's development, from mission design, through satellite development and manufacturing, ground segment design and deployment, to mission operations.

By uniting its long-standing engineering and systems integration capabilities under Indra Space, the company is well positioned to deliver secure, scalable, and sovereign communications for a post-quantum world. Its continued investment in advanced communications ensures Europe remains at the forefront, ensuring its technological sovereignty and defense readiness.
