Indra boosts European Defense with AI for military operations in cyberspace

Indra, a leading technology and defense company, is developing the core capability to manage autonomous agents of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a crucial step forward in supporting military operations in European cyberspace.

El AIDA project brings together 28 organizations from 15 countries in the European Union, and Indra is the sole representative of the Spanish industry. Its main role is to lead the creation of a flexible and resilient central platform that will enable the deployment, monitoring, and recovery of these intelligent agents. This infrastructure will guarantee seamless interoperability with other military systems and a comprehensive view of the operations of cyber defenceTo do this, Indra will use IndraMind, its intelligence platform for critical, multi-domain operations, ensuring sovereign and secure development.

AI: A Game Changer on the Digitalized Battlefield

The increasing digitalization of the battlefield, the emergence of new threats such as drones, and the importance of automation in onboard systems have increased both the risks and opportunities for military engagement in cyberspace. AIDA's autonomous AI agents are designed to reduce human intervention in cyberspace, shortening decision-making cycles and providing a strategic advantage over the enemy.

These intelligent agents will detect cyberthreats, analyze them, and respond autonomously, or assist human operators in decision-making. Their role will be key to supporting the various combat functions on the digital battlefield, including movement and maneuver, intelligence, fire, sustainment, command and control, protection, and information.

The AIDA project explores on an unprecedented scale in Europe the advantages that intelligence can offer.

Indra at the forefront of European cyber defense

Indra will not only provide the project with cyber situational awareness capabilities, but will also integrate the agents' functionality with command and control processes. It will also coordinate the only demonstration case that will use these agents in real military operations, supported by a demonstrator in Spain that will explore the advantages for the Spanish cyber combat system (SCOMCE).

Indra's centralized platform will allow these agents to operate independently and integrate as part of a "cyber mosaic" of elements with distributed, collaborative, and swarm capabilities within European military networks. Indra is already leading the development of this European cyber mosaic through the project EU-GUARDIAN of the European Defense Fund, where AIDA's contribution is seen as fundamental.

Luis José García de la IglesiaGarcía de la Iglesia, head of Cyber Defense at Indra, emphasizes the evolution towards a "decision-driven war," where speed and effectiveness in decision-making are crucial. "Automation, distributed operations, continuous learning, and artificial intelligence are some of the pillars that will solidify the advantages of our combat forces over those of the enemy. In this sense, the AIDA project is exploring, on an unprecedented scale in Europe, the advantages that AI and automation will offer in the operation of cyberspace as the fifth battle domain," explained García de la Iglesia.

AIDA is the first European Defence Fund project supporting the concept of NATO de Autonomous Intelligent Cyber Defense Agent (AICA) for active, autonomous, and intelligent cyber defense. This project strengthens Indra's presence in the large consortiums developing future defense capabilities and systems. Europe, positioning it at the forefront of developing these vital capabilities for sovereignty and intervention in highly digitalized theaters of operations.

Indra has also led the ECYSAP project, the largest cyber situational awareness project for defense in Europe, and its continuations, EU-GUARDIAN and ECYSAP EYE, consolidating its commitment to the strategic objective of becoming the Spanish coordinator for European cyberspace programs.
