Fish is an essential element of Korean cuisine, with an annual consumption of more than 2 million tons (FAO 2). The per capita consumption of fish in South Korea It is one of the largest in the world (around 60 kg/person year. FAO 2022). South Korea is a large fish importer, with annual imports of more than 1,5 million tons. Therefore, it needs imports to cover its needs in this area.

Just like sixth world importer of fish, South Korea imports a wide variety of seafood, such as salmon, crab, octopus and scallops. The products with the highest imports were frozen, followed by prepared and canned products and finally live or fresh products.

The main suppliers are China, Russia, Vietnam, the United States and Norway. The importance of fish in the Korean diet is reflected in the wide variety of dishes prepared with this ingredient. Some of the most popular dishes include bokkeumbap (fried rice with fish), jeyuk bokkeum (fish stew with vegetables), and pajeon (fish pancake). Given the high per capita consumption of seafood in South Korea and the country's dependence on imports to satisfy this demand, the fish and seafood market in South Korea is presented as an opportunity for Andalusian companies in the sector.
