The 21st edition of MedaLogistics drives the future of Mediterranean logistics in a changing global environment

La 21st edition of MedaLogistics, one of the most important events in the Mediterranean logistics calendar, concluded successfully on June 19th in Fira Barcelona. The event, organized by the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce (ASCAME) and the Barcelona Free Trade Zone Consortium (CZFB), brought together a large representation of CEOs, experts, and influential figures from the sector to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the future of global logistics.

Under the motto "Imagining the Mediterranean Logistics Future", the MedaLogistics 2025 sessions focused on analyzing the sustainability, the digitalization, the supply chain diversification and investment in new infrastructureThis edition was particularly marked by the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the trade and tariff war initiated by United States, factors that continue to exert significant pressure on transport and logistics worldwide.

Anwar Zibaoui, General Coordinator of ASCAME, emphasized the relevance of the meeting: “This new edition of MedaLogistics has not been just another event, but a inflection point to establish a new roadmap for the coming years in the logistics and transport sector, to discuss and analyze initiatives and solutions that promote the resilience in a constantly evolving global landscape, and for reposition the Mediterranean as the main logistics platform for east-west flows and the best option for channeling goods between Asia, Africa and europe".

Zibaoui also addressed the current complex geopolitical scenario, noting that “geopolitics has become a determining factor in economic decisions, with growing tensions between United States and China, challenges to multilateral agreements and protracted conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and the Red Sea, to which the war between Israel and Iran has now been added. Despite this complex scenario, trade flows continue to grow. We are not witnessing deglobalization, but rather a reconfiguration of international trade towards greater regionalizationIn this context, MedaLogistics 2025 served as a call to action, highlighting the crucial role of the Mediterranean logistics industry in competing in the global market and attracting investments that improve connectivity between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Digitalization, Sustainability and Regional Cooperation: Pillars of the Future

The summit highlighted the digitalization as a key driver of transformation. The panelists highlighted how the Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics and automation are streamlining operations and replacing traditional processes. Daniel Acosta, CEO of Grydd, emphasized that AI is revolutionizing load optimization, demand forecasting, inventory management, and warehouse automation. Emphasis was placed on the need to democratize access to technology and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

La sustainability This was another key focus, especially in maritime logistics. Progress was made in the adoption of LNG, port electrification, and solar energy initiatives. Manel Cebrián, vice president of ANBEHe highlighted that marinas have the potential to become self-sufficient energy centers in the short term. Finally, the public-private cooperation among Mediterranean countries was considered essential to improve infrastructure and interregional connectivity. Representatives from Greece and Tunisia shared success stories in port modernization and trade promotion. Other key discussions included the importance of political stability to attract foreign investment and the need to invest in human capital, providing professionals with the skills needed to meet the changing challenges of the sector. The vital role of women in shaping the future of transportation and logistics in the region, promoting their empowerment in leadership and operational positions.
