ANALYSIS OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY
La Internationalization Commission It has brought together experts to discuss the profound transformations of the global economy, highlighting the need for Europe to defend multilateralism in the face of the rise of economic nationalism, the shift of the global axis towards Asia and the search for greater resilience in supply chains.
La Internationalization Commission of the Spanish Chamber of CommerceUnder the chairmanship of Eva Piera —General Director of External Relations, Communication and Brand at Mapfre—, a new day of analysis has been carried out to address the historical advantages of free trade and the dizzying changes that are currently reshaping the global economy. The meeting benefited from the academic perspectives of Francisco Requena, Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Valencia, and Gonzalo Solana, Director of the Nebrija Chair in International Business.
During the session, Professor Francisco Requena presented the theoretical foundations that demonstrate the benefits of international tradeAccording to the expert, free trade remains an undeniable driver of growth, productive specialization, and overall well-being. However, Requena warned of a paradigm shift in the current economic debate: the priorities of international markets have moved from the strict pursuit of efficiency to the need to guarantee... security and resilience of the economies. This phenomenon, he pointed out, is one of the main factors that has increased citizen and institutional distrust towards the process of globalization During the last years.
For his part, Gonzalo Solana offered a detailed analysis of the systemic transformations impacting international business. The director of the Nebrija Chair defined the current situation as a scenario of "polycrisis", characterized by the rebalancing of power between developed powers and emerging economies, as well as by the evident shift of the economic center of gravity towards the Asian continent.
Solana also emphasized the growing state intervention. He warned about the direct impact that the rise of economic nationalism and technological and geopolitical rivalry —especially among the great powers— are having an impact on operations foreign tradeHe added that this complex scenario is compounded by the challenge of rising global debt and the consolidation of a new, clearly multipolar international order.
The day culminated in an intense debate in which the participants reached a clear conclusion for the business and political fabric of the Old Continent: it is vital that Europe maintain its leadership in the defense of multilateralism and a rules-based trading system. Experts agreed that protecting these values is the surest way to guarantee competitiveness and economic prosperity in the region. Finally, the strategic importance of promoting next generation trade agreementsdesigned not only to strengthen the influence of the European Union globally, but also to open new avenues for expansion and business for European companies abroad.
