The International Contemporary Art Fair, ARCOlisboa successfully closes its most international edition

Great international meeting of contemporary art in Portugal

In this edition, the Fair has had the participation of 86 galleries from 23 countries, which means an increase of 32% compared to the previous year and a record participation in its entire history.

ARCOlisbon, fair co-organized by IFEMA MADRID and Lisbon City Council, will close the doors of its 6th edition this afternoon with a positive balance and a good commercial pace. The artistic content proposed by the participating galleries has been the best attraction to attract quality national and international collecting.

 

ARCOlisboa, which has had one more year with the commitment of the government of Portugal and local authorities, with the presence of the Minister of Culture and the president of the Lisbon City Council, together with the general director of IFEMA MADRID, at the opening ceremony on May 25, estimates reaching 13.000 visitors, confirming the recovery and surpassing pre-pandemic numbers.

 

In this edition, the International Contemporary Art Fair has had the participation of 86 galleries from 23 countries, which means an increase of 32% compared to the previous year and a record participation in its entire history.

 

Located in the historic space of the National cordoaria, the fair has established itself as the great international meeting of contemporary art in Portugal and an essential instrument for the visibility of Portuguese artists in the face of international institutions and more than 150 collectors from Europe and America. The interest aroused by the artistic proposals of the participating galleries has been, together with the city's social and cultural program, the best attraction to attract prominent international collectors and professionals.

 

ARCOlisboa will close in this way with a positive balance. From day one, the optimism of collectors and institutions that have closed numerous acquisitions has been confirmed. Among the purchases are those made by the Municipal Chamber of Lisbon, which has purchased a total of 22 works by 10 artists: Andreia Santana -Filomena Soares-, António Bolota -Vera Cortês-, René Tavares -This is not a White Cube-, Jorge Molder -Miguel Nabinho-, Maria Trabulo -Presença-, Luísa Jacinto -Quadrado Azul Galeria-, Yonamine -Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art-, Adriana Molder -Galeria 111-, Dayana Lucas -Lehmann + Silva- and Daniela Ângelo -Francisco Fino Galeria -.

 

La EDP ​​Foundation You have made purchases for your collection. Among some of the works acquired, 15 pieces by the creators Eugénia Mussa -Monitor-, René Tavares -This is not a White Cube-, Sara Chang Yan -Madragoa-, Ana Manso -Pedro Cera-, Bruno Cidra -Bruno Múrias-, stand out. Hugo Brazão -Balcony Gallery- and Maria Durão -Kubikgallery-.

 

The seventh edition of ARCOlisboa will be held from May 22 to 25, 2024 at the Cordoaria Nacional

 

They add those of the ARCO Foundation that, with the advice of Manuel Segade and João Laia, has acquired works by the Brazilian artist Yuli Yamagata, from the Madragoa gallery, and by the Mexican Alejandra Venegas, from the Dürst Britt & Mayhew gallery, which will become part of the Fundación ARCO Collection, housed in the CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de May of the Community of Madrid.

 

For his part, Vieira de Almeida has increased the funds in his collection with the purchase of a work by Fernanda Fragateiro, in Filomena Soares. 

 

As a novelty, and with a jury made up of Filipa Oliveira and Ángel Calvo Ulloa, has been granted First prize Fundação Millenium BCP for the best stand of the fair, which went to the Vera Cortês gallery.

 

For the fourth year, ARCOlisboa has presented the Opening Lisboa Award whose jury, formed by Beatriz Alonso, Ela Bittencourt, Lucía Casani, Natxo Checa, Bárbara Rodríguez, Manuel Segade and Luis Silva, has recognized the gallery Anca Poterasu -Bucharest-. This award rewards the best stand in the section with a refund of the price of their space at the fair.

 

ARCOlisbon is co-organized by the Lisbon City Council, with the support of DGARTES, Fundação EDP, Fundação Altice, Fundação Millennium BCP, MEXTO Property Investment, AC/E, Turismo de Portugal, Turismo de Lisboa, Kinda Homes, Bellissimo Cafés / Marca Nabeiro Group, from the Fundação Vasco Vieira de Almeida, Art Works and Ruinart, and with the local coordination of the production company Café Pessoa.
