The ICEX Business Guide Celebrates 40 Years of Promoting Foreign Investment in Spain

 

Since its first edition, the guide has summarized the most relevant regulatory aspects affecting foreign investment in approximately 400 pages. It covers crucial areas such as corporate law, taxation, labor and social security law, anti-money laundering, public aid for businesses, financial regulation, intellectual and industrial property, e-commerce, and accounting and auditing, among others.

 

Available for free on the website of ICEX-Invest in Spain Available in Spanish and English, the guide is not only vital for those new to Spanish regulations, but also for those looking to delve deeper into business operations in the country. Its English version is particularly relevant, providing foreign investors with a first look at the Spanish legal system.

 

In fact, the Business Guide is one of the most downloaded documents on the Invest in Spain website, attracting more than 50.000 users annually. The latest edition was consulted by users in 2.605 cities in 156 countries. Mexico, United Kingdom and Colombia led the visits, concentrating 10% of the total.

On the occasion of this milestone, His Majesty the King received today at the Zarzuela Palace a delegation from ICEX, headed by its CEO, Elisa CarbonellAlso present were representatives of the international firm Garrigues, responsible for preparing the guide, led by its executive president, Ferdinand Vives, along with ambassadors from the main investing countries in Spain.

 

Spain: A Key Destination for Global FDI

 

Despite the uncertain global outlook and the decline in productive capital flows, Spain remains one of the most attractive destinations for foreign investmentIn 2024, the country ranked as the 13th largest recipient of FDI worldwide and the third in Europe, surpassed only by Luxembourg and France, with flows exceeding $30.500 billion. The stock of foreign investment in Spain has reached an all-time high of more than €608.000 billion, consolidating in strategic, high-value-added sectors such as ICT, energy, and manufacturing.

 

Spain also excels at attracting greenfield projects (new facilities or activities), ranking sixth in the world in 2024 as the country with the highest number of these initiatives, which are essential for job creation and sustainable growth. Currently, more than 20.000 foreign-owned companies operate in the country, generating approximately 1.900.000 jobs.
