Foreign investment drives the boom in the Agritech sector in Spain

 

In a global context where technology and sustainability are key to agricultural development, Spain has established itself as a European leader in the Agritech sector, as revealed by the recent Mapping the Agritech Ecosystem 2024. This report, prepared by ICEX-Invest in Spain along with the Cooperative Group Cajamar, offers a detailed view of the opportunities that this sector presents for the foreign investment, especially in research and development (R&D&I).

In addition, there is a growing demand for sustainable solutions within the agricultural field. The new agritech companies They play a crucial role in developing technologies that improve production efficiency while minimizing negative environmental impacts. Among the technological areas in demand are: efficient water management; optimized fertilization; advanced pest control; advanced agricultural robotic machinery; extensive use of renewable energies as well as comprehensive data management and traceability systems; cybersecurity.

 

In recent years, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of agritech startups in Spain and this reality “must be a trigger to continue working along the established line,” the Report indicates. It also assesses that the access to capital available to entrepreneurs is allowing the implementation of procedures, technologies or resources that were not previously available.

Finally, after analysing the sector in its different areas, he concludes that in view of the data and the technologies applied, the sector “presents a considerable volume of incipient startups with a relevant weight at an international level, and Spain can be considered a power in the agritech ecosystem”.
