The Junta de Castilla y León calls for aid for the promotion of wine in third countries

Promotion programs will be run, for the first time, from January to December

La Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development published this month in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León (Bocyl) the call for aid for wine promotion measures in third countries. This aid, which is in high demand by the Community's wineries, is financed with a total national budget of 55,59 million euros. This budget will be distributed among the autonomous communities based on the requests made by each of them.

Applications, which will be submitted electronically at the electronic headquarters of the Autonomous Administration, will be received until 14.00:14 p.m. on September XNUMX. Upon receipt, it will be sent to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the official list of applications received, so that the Sectoral Conference assigns the budget with which the promotion programs will be financed, which will be approved by the General Directorate of the Agri-Food Industry and Chain.

As a notable novelty this year, it is worth mentioning that the programs will run from January 1 to December 31, 2024, coinciding with the calendar year, while in previous years the promotion programs ran from May 1 to December 30. April of the following year.

Industry support

This measure is included in the Strategic Plan of the CAP in Spain, within the Wine Sector Intervention, being the first year that is developed under this new regulation, given that the previous framework, included in the Support Program for the Spanish Wine Sector, ends in the current fiscal year 2023.

Since the beginning of application of this measure, in 2009, they have been granted since the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development aid for an amount of 95,9 million euros for a total of 1.937 approved promotion programs.

Thanks to the competitiveness of the wines of Castilla y León, and with the financial help provided by these funds, wine exports have grown significantly year after year, in such a way that, since 2009, it has been possible to increase by 146% the amount of annual wine exports from the Community.

The impact of the promotion measure is evident when knowing that the amount of annual wine exports to third countries since 2009 has grown by 205%, while the growth experienced by exports to European Union countries has been 74%. Currently, sales to third countries are more than double that of wine exports to EU countries.

This commitment to export has allowed Castilla y León wines to increase their sales in other countries until they exceed the figure of 2022 million euros in 235.

Call 2022

In the last call, published in 2022 and resolved in 2023, Castilla y León has granted aid in the amount of 6,7 million euros to launch 111 promotion programs carried out by wineries and designations of origin in which they will invest. almost 12,4 million euros with the aim of opening new markets and taking advantage of the opportunities of emerging economies. Castilla y León has been the community that has received the most funds in this concept, which makes clear the dynamism of the sector in this autonomy.

The main activities assisted in this measure have been, in order of importance, promotion at the point of sale, product presentations, trade missions and media advertising campaigns. These activities are carried out in the destination countries, unlike what happens with reverse missions, which are the visits that importers or journalists from the destination market carry out at the winery headquarters.

By country, the main destinations of aid beneficiaries are, in order of importance: United States, Mexico, Switzerland, United Kingdom, China, Canada, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Japan, Panama, Costa Rica and Peru. These countries pool more than 90% of the available budget for promotional activities.
