ESA's Proba-3 mission, led by Sener, ready for launch

 

This project, which involves a consortium of more than 29 companies from 17 countries, aims to demonstrate the feasibility of high-precision formation flight between satellites in space.

 

During the final test, the satellites transmitted images and executed commands from the control center, simulating part of their planned 19,5-hour orbit around the Earth. These satellites, called Coronagraph and Occulter, will fly in millimeter-wide formation to block the Sun and allow prolonged observation of the solar corona. The flight will be completely autonomous, although the tests included the transmission of commands to observe solar phenomena.

 

The Proba-3 mission marks a milestone in space technology by achieving this level of precision in flight and promises to revolutionize the way the Sun is observed. The satellites will be sent to Satish Dhawan Space Centre on October 21 for launch aboard a rocket PSLV-XL.

 

The mission is the latest in a series of experiments that began in 2001 under the name Proba, which means "Let's try it" in Latin.
