The Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government has inaugurated a new commercial office en Sydney, Australia. This opening marks a significant milestone in the expansion of the Basque Trade & Investment Foreign Network, which now has 22 offices around the world, serving more than 92 countries. The office will be headed by Emma Stevens and will operate under the official name of “Australia and New Zealand Office”.
The counselor Mikel Jauregi He stressed the strategic importance of this initiative: “Our commercial offices are a fundamental tool for attracting foreign companies to the Basque Country that want to invest and establish themselves in our country.” He also stressed that this expansion is part of the commitment of the Basque government ’s relationship with the basque parliament to strengthen the internationalization policy.
The Basque Country seeks to position itself globally through well-defined strategies that promote both internal growth and the attraction of foreign investment.
Australia represents an attractive market due to its position as the world's 13th largest economy by GDP, its skilled workforce and economic stability. According to a study by the Orkestra-Basque Institute of CompetitivenessThis country offers great potential for Basque companies in strategic sectors such as wind and solar energy, infrastructure, mining and agribusiness.
Despite the economic potential, there are currently only 26 Basque establishments in Australia. With this new office, the Basque Government hopes to significantly increase these numbers and promote not only commercial actions but also technological cooperation between the two territories.
The opening is in line with the Basque Government's ongoing efforts to expand its institutional presence in Pacific Asia over the past two decades, joining delegations already established in China (2003) India (2009) Singapore (2015) Japan and South Korea (2022).
