European technological sovereignty: an imperative in the Trump era

The presidency of Donald Trump has generated a significant change in economic and geopolitical relations worldwide. In this context, the European Union (EU) faces the challenge of strengthening its technological independence to avoid excessive dependence on United States.

According to Sancho LerenaCEO Pandora FMS, “something similar must be done in the EU, because if not everything will remain the same and the process will be much slower.” This statement comes after Pandora FMS's failed attempt to obtain a contract with the NASA due to restrictions based on their nationality.

The current landscape shows that approximately 90% of European data is managed by US companies, while cloud giants such as Azure, AWS and Google Cloud control near the 85 % of the market with hardly any European competition. This situation is alarming for many experts who see it as a potential threat to geopolitical tensions or international sanctions.

Lerena stresses: “In these first days of Trump's presidency, it is already clear that Europe has to start walking alone if it does not want to depend on the US for all its economic decisions.” He also stresses that “The digital economy is based on obtaining, storing and managing data”, critical processes that currently depend largely on foreign companies.

Despite the incipient development within the European continent – such as its own social networks or middleware platforms – there is still a long way to go to compete with the most attractive economic offers from abroad. Lerena insists: “We must strongly invest in European technology and, in our case, Spanish technology.”

Forecasts point to a future where countries like Spain will have 25% more companies using AI and Big Data before the end of 2025; and it is expected that massive use (75%) will be achieved among European companies by 2030 in terms of joint use between cloud, AI or Big Data.

Recent political changes are driving new technological strategies within the European continent seeking to protect its economic interests through innovative solutions of its own in the face of the current dominance exercised from outside its continental borders.
