The strength of the internationalization of the Spanish economy improves by 6,2%

amec report

The increase in regular exporting companies contributes decisively to the ISI (Internationalization Strength Index).

La solidity of the internationalization of the Spanish economy has improved by 6,2% throughout 2018. This is indicated by the Internationalization Strength Index (ISI), prepared by amec, the association of companies internationalized industrial, which evaluates a total of 19 indicators.

This index places the strength of internationalization at 7,26 points out of 10. The growth of exporting companies regularly has clearly influenced the good progression of the Index. Specifically, a third of the growth of the ISI is due to the increase in the indicator of the Export Base. The Spanish companies have had a better performance compared to the whole of the European Union.

The increase in protectionism and export barriers, aspects that have had a negative impact on the evolution of the Index, have nevertheless also had positive effects: the implementation abroad, with more companies establishing themselves in other markets and, with this, the Spanish investment abroad.

El protectionism and the increase in the export base They cause the participation indicator in value chains to decrease, which has also had a negative impact on the ISI.

The increase in protectionism and export barriers has had a clear effect: the establishment of Spanish companies abroad and with it investment abroad grows.

The slowdown in the economy has also had a negative contribution to the index. export growth.

El Technological Intensity Indicator has regressed and has not experienced either positive or negative behavior in the ISI that of Public investment in internationalization, aspects that for amec have a negative reading, since "we find ourselves in a decisive moment in which it is necessary to put all efforts into innovation and internationalization in companies, if we want to secure a place in a market that evolves and transforms increasingly faster and in which competition is global," explains the CEO of amec, Joan Tristany.

The ISI, an index created by amec in 2015 and updated every year, aims to summarize the strength and robustness of internationalization and observe its evolution. Previously, internationalization had been measured separately from aspects such as export volume, the diversification of destinations, the number of exporting companies or the technological level of exports. But a global vision, a systemic index, was missing. In this way, the ISI evaluates a total of 19 indicators, such as the number of regular exporting companies and those established abroad, the business and sectoral concentration of exports, the exporting SMEs, the variation in exports, their weight in the GDP, the share of world exports, investment abroad and foreign investment, the geographical diversification of exports and investment, the technological level of exports, the variation in their prices, participation in international value chains, financial instruments for internationalization, establishments abroad, the public budget for internationalization and export barriers.
