The European Union and Spain join forces in the face of the US tariff threat.

 

The meeting in Brussels focused on shared concerns about the impact that US tariff measures could have on the European economy. Charles Body expressed the Spanish Government's strong support for the efforts of the European Commission to maintain a constant dialogue with the administration of USA., seeking a solution that benefits both parties.

 

"The European Union's actions must be based on unity," Minister Cuerpo stated at the end of the meeting. "Our strength lies in our unity, which makes us a relevant player on the world stage at any negotiating table."

 

Spain, aware of the importance of the relationship transatlanticThe Spanish government, which represents 30% of global trade with a daily exchange of €4.400 billion in goods and services, advocated for a constructive stance to strengthen these ties. However, the Spanish government also emphasized the need for Europe to be prepared to react swiftly, proportionally, and unitedly to any imposition of tariffs.

 

In a context of tension and uncertainty, Cuerpo highlighted the importance of ratify the trade agreement with Mercosur, a key economic bloc composed of Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. This agreement represents a significant economic opportunity for Europe, while ensuring the protection of sensitive agricultural sectors and promoting environmental and social standards.

 

Furthermore, Cuerpo and Šefčovič discussed the need to implement European-level instruments and measures to support sectors that could be affected by increased tariffs. In Spain, the government is already working on a national contingency plan, as announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last week.

 

As part of this plan, Minister Cuerpo has held meetings with representatives of key industries such as steel, aluminum, food, beverages, wine, and automotive, seeking solutions and strategies to mitigate the potential impact of the tariff measures.
