Ten universities and several companies will analyze the challenges and share best practices in this field.
Errors in computer applications can have serious consequences for business productivity or even for personal safety if they occur in critical sectors such as medicine or aerospace. model-driven software engineering (in English, MOE) works with a high-level view of the system being developed. This representation, called a model, is simpler than the source code and makes it easier to understand, manipulate, and analyze the system. In this area, the UOC will lead the Network of Excellence in Model-Driven Software Engineering in Spain.
In the project, funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, research groups from universities in Almeria, Autonomous University of Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, Malaga, Murcia, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Polytechnic University of Valencia and King Juan Carlos UniversityResearchers from other universities and software development companies will also collaborate in the Network, such as Open Canarias or IKERLAN.

Model-driven software engineering enables improve productivity and the quality of the software, facilitates portability from a program to new platforms and reduces maintenance costs. The techniques applied by this engineering are used in different industries, such as the mobile communications and automotive industry, and, among other applications, allow you to simulate the operation of a final product, adapt the language (code) of a program for different platforms and configure a product catalog.
The objective of the Network of Excellence is to bring together research groups and companies in this field to analyze the challenges that arise: the adaptability of computer systems to meet an increase in the number of users or the volume of data to be processed (scalability), the ease with which people can use them (usability), the construction and integration of support tools, and their use in new fields of application. In addition, the following will be shared: Good practices to promote the transfer of university results to industry.
The researcher of the SOM Research Lab research group, Robert Clarisó will coordinate the consortium for two years with two main priorities: promote scientific excellence with the increase in international collaborations and projects and Consolidate the adoption of model-driven software engineering technologies in the industrial field through initiatives such as completing industrial doctorates or participating in business clusters and technology platforms.
The planned activities include biannual meetings, research stays at the various institutions participating in the Network, visits by international researchers, a summer school for students and young researchers on model-driven software engineering, and a portal aimed at promoting collaborations with companies. To foster the Capabilities and maximize the impact, some of these actions will be linked to international scientific events organized by members of the Network.
