Spanish construction companies set a historic record in foreign turnover, exceeding €55.000 billion.

 

The business of the Spanish construction companies in foreign markets has reached a new milestone, recording a turnover of 2024 55.600 millones de euros. This figure represents a 12,6% growth compared to 2023, consolidating the commitment of these companies to the CapabilitiesThis is revealed by the latest conclusions of the “Construction” Sectors study published by the INFORMA DBK Sectoral Observatory.

 

While business abroad flourishes, construction production in Spain showed a moderate slowdown in its growth. Although it exceeded 165.000 billion euros, its increase was at a 5,2% in 2024, in contrast to the 7,2% recorded in 2023. In real terms, the variation was 3,5%, half a percentage point more than the previous year.

 

Within the national market, the housing construction activity reached the 92.450 millones de euros, which represents an increase of 3,6% compared to the previous year. This segment represents 56,0% of total production. On the other hand, civil work continued to be a key driver, leading the other buildings and construction segment to grow by 7,4% in 2024, reaching €72.667 billion, or 44,0% of the total.

 

It is noteworthy that the billing abroad represented the 25% of total business of Spanish construction companies in 2024, highlighting the growing dependence and success of these companies internationally.

 

The sector has also experienced growth in its operational capacity. In January 2024, there were nearly 95.000 companies with construction activities (excluding companies without employees), 4,5% more than the previous year. Employment volume also showed a significant increase, reaching 1,48 million people in the first quarter of 2025, compared to 1,42 million recorded in the same period in 2024.

 

 

Foreign turnover represented 25% of the total business of Spanish companies.

 

 

The sector's supply continues to be mainly composed of small businesses, with a local and specialized focus. However, at the top of the market are the large construction groups listed on the stock exchangeThese groups, with strong penetration in international markets and in the civil engineering business, play a leading role.

 

In 2024, the six main construction groups concentrated around 28% of the total revenue generated by the Spanish sector. Their dominance is even more pronounced in the foreign business, where they monopolized more than 95% of the turnover, demonstrating its undisputed leadership in international expansion. In contrast, its share of production within Spain was less than 5%.
